My envisioned Future

‘The Hunger Games’ predicts a very bleak outcome for the future. The world is controlled by its hunger, with those who have access to the resources holding all the power. It fits the driver of our scenario: a world where there is a lack of resources and food, however, does not have a focus on increased societal focus on sustainability. War is rampant; greed and the desire for status overturn the need to help others. The Capitol is where the elite dwell. They are the richest of the rich, with no empathy or care for the suffering of others below them. This is a very possible future as it is reflected somewhat in our current world between developed and developing countries(Quartz 2013), in which the standards of living are drastically different. What is seen as slavery in one country could be seen as a common job in another. I believe this future is very possible although I imagine it in a more optimistic light, due to the increasing awareness of human impact on the environment. Another crucial aspect of the future is surveillance. In, ‘The Hunger Games’ surveillance is widespread and almost inescapable. Katniss finds what she believes to be a hidden area but later finds out she had been watched the entire time. pasted image 0 (1).png

George Orwell’s novel, ‘1984’, explores surveillance that governs society as a whole, through hidden microphones and screens able to detect even the smallest changes in facial expressions. The book was published in 1949, and in the 70 years that have followed, these changes have already started to take place(TechKhabaren 2014). Phones have the ability to be hacked and record people as they are often always kept on hand. This also applies to other devices such as computers and smartwatches. I believe that these predictions of a society under constant surveillance are correct, and we are already heading towards that direction. As technology advances further the ability to track people will become easier and more discreet, however, I am still somewhat optimistic about the benefits that could come of this. Lack of privacy would be a tradeoff for the ability to be instantly aided in case of emergencies, etc. and having access to all past information immediately. This tracking will undoubtedly be primarily utilised for monetary and influential purposes but in my group’s scenario we hope to use it as a driving factor for positive change that tracks and only encourages positive actions.
